Year 5

Welcome to the Year 5 Class Page!

Year 5 is normally taught by Mrs Haupt (Monday-Wednesday) and Mrs Capper (Thursday and Friday). We are supported by Mrs McCrum throughout the week.

Corona Virus Update

Thank you all staying at home to stop the spread of Corona Virus. It is indeed a very strange time for everyone, and challenging in many ways too. We hope that you have enjoyed working your way through the learning packs we have sent home and that you are still finding enough time to fit in fun activities and exercise with your families. We really hope that we will be seeing you back at school soon, but in the meantime please continue to work through the learning packs and CGP books (they’re fab!). Keep on challenging yourself on Times table Rock Stars and keep up the reading- if you have any book recommendations we would love to hear from you.  Remember to email us your photos of home learning and fun activities you have been doing too.  We miss you all.

If we come back to school this term these are the areas we will be studying:

We will be exploring traditional tales. In particular we will look at the work of Michael Morpurgo particularly his book Beowulf. We will be writing explanations and balanced arguments and will also be listening to, reading and writing raps. Spellings will be tested on Thursdays.

In Maths this term we will be…

We will be identifying the place value of digits within decimal numbers.  Studying geometry and the properties of shapes including movement of position and direction. Finally, we will be investigating measures including volume. We will be investigating the relationship between metric units of measurement and comparing them to imperial measures.

We will be continuing to learn about the similarities and differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird. We will be describing sexual and asexual reproduction in some plants and animals, including humans. We will also be exploring how humans change from young to old.

History and Geography

We will be exploring Roman withdrawal from Britain, and Anglo-Saxon and Scot settlement including their invasion, kingdoms and rulers, art and culture, and Christian conversion.

We will also be studying the human and Physical geography of an area of the UK and Europe (where the Anglo-Saxons came from) and how it has changed over time. We will be exploring land-use and farming.

We will be revisiting the Hindu faith looking at the different festivals and celebrations.

We will also be exploring the comparison of Christianity and scientific approach to explain how the world was created.

We will be having swimming lessons this term on a Wednesday afternoon (for 10 weeks). On Thursdays children will be taught Cricket with Primary Sports Stars, and later in the term we will be doing Athletics.

Art and Design Technology

We will be exploring cooking and eating healthy meals and comparing our food to that of the Anglo-Saxons. We will also be creating illuminated letters, and designing Anglo-Saxon jewellery. Our artist study is Rousseau.

This term we will also be using computers to create art. We will continue to use Times Table Rock Stars and would like to encourage children to explore PurpleMash (for which children have their own logins).

In Music this term we will be playing music and improvising, using conventional and graphic notation to record simple rhythmic compositions. We will also be finding and recognising relationships between lyrics and melodies.
